15 Albums To Look Forward To This Summer
#1 Jay-Z - "Magna Carta Holy Grail" (July 4th)
Though Kanye West's “Yeezus” has pretty much taken over the Internet, it didn't stop Hov from making the summer's biggest announcement: a new Jay album. During the fifth game of the NBA Finals, Jay-Z announced that his 12th studio album would be titled Magna Carta Holy Grail and that it would be released on July 4th through a partnership with Samsung.
Hoping to write “new rules”, Jay sold a million copies of the album to Samsung – at the mere price of $5 (equalling a $5 million deal) – so it could be serviced through an app on release day. Which, let's face it, is good news for Samsung Galaxy owners. The 43-year-old rapper has been working on the new album since May 2012 as he's collaborated with Frank Ocean and Roc Nation producer Jahlil Beats. Production is also reported to come from Kanye West, Rick Rubin, Swiss Beatz, Timbaland and Pharrell Williams, while Hov himself has been caught in the studio with Drake, Nas and Justin Timberlake. Along with releasing the new album through Samsung devices, the record is reportedly getting a proper physical release on July 9th.
#2 Chris Brown - "X" (July 16th)
Remember that album Chris Brown kept talking about that no one thought existed? Well, it seems like it actually does exist and that it will be getting released this summer. Formely titled “Carpe Diem”, Brown's sixth full-length, “X”, is finally hitting the streets on July 16th via Sony/RCA.
After word broke out in late 2012 that Brown's new release was in development, the multi-threat pop star confirmed it through several interviews and listening sessions in March/April 2013. Along with releasing two singles - “Fine China” and the Aaliyah-sampling “Don't Think They Know” - Brown opened up in a recent interview stating that his new music would take a different direction. Rather than it be pop-influenced and explicit, he noted it had a more mature and soulful sound, as he's worked with everybody from Pharrell to Kendrick Lamar to Nicki Minaj to Wiz Khalifa to Diplo. And yes, the album will actually feature Rihanna as the two are said to have paired up for an album track titled “Put It Up”.
#3 Mariah Carey - "The Art Of Letting Go" (July 23rd)
Nicki Minaj may be a massive thorn in her side but Mariah Carey's fourteenth studio album has been an even bigger one. The 43-year-old singer-songwriter has been working on her new record since 2011, after the birth of her twins Moraccan and Monroe, and by July 2012, had reportedly finished seven new songs. With plans to release it on January 2013, the album was pushed to March and eventually scheduled for a proper release date of July 23rd.
After releasing the album's lead single, “#Beautiful” featuring Miguel, Billboard asked Carey about the title of the album but she declined to reveal it. She did note her collaborators on the record, which include R. Kelly, Jermaine Dupri, The-Dream and Hit-Boy, and noted “there are a lot more raw ballads than people expect”. On June 16th, 2013, Mariah released a statement saying, “Melancholic moment letting go of something personal to me; yet I couldn't be more excited to give three years of my soul to the fans”. Considering she's released “Heartbreaker”, “Shake It Off”, we couldn't be more excited for the album, which has been given the title “The Art Of Letting Go” and will be released on Island Records.
